Being in touch with the elements is not difficult. You just need to remember that nature is always here with you, for you, wherever you are. The earth is always under your feet, its gravity keeping you close to it. Your body is 70-75% water; there’s no life without water. Air is all around and within, from your first to your last breath. Fire shows up in the sky each and every day, even through rain and snow.

As children, our connection with nature is obvious, until we are told that soil, insects, anything we find outside is “dirty”. Soon, we hear that there are more important things in life, like getting great marks at school so we can make money later and join the rat race.

Growing up in a dysfunctional family in Brittany, my safest place was outdoors in nature, by the sea most of all, with my wonderful dog, Scotty, always by my side. The immensity of the Atlantic in front of me, of the land behind me, of the sky above and Scotty (with his fiery red coat) next to me, I was strongly aware of the elements and their incredible power, their omnipresence helping me to remain sane and centred, feeling safe when home was an unloving and unsafe place. I moved to the UK aged 21.
